General information only: This guide does not consider your objectives, financial situation or needs and is not financial advice. Credit eligibility, rates and terms depend on the lender's assessment.

Key points

  • An EV does not automatically qualify for a lower rate or approval.
  • Used-EV value can be affected by battery condition and remaining warranty.
  • Compare the complete loan and ownership costs, not the advertised rate alone.
  • Tax concessions depend on current rules and the way the vehicle is provided.

An EV loan is still assessed as a car loan

EV finance is usually assessed like any other car loan. The lender considers your financial position, affordability, loan structure and the vehicle being used as security. Choosing an EV does not guarantee approval or a discounted rate.

Some lenders offer EV or sustainability products. Eligibility may depend on the powertrain, vehicle age, purchase price and whether the car is new or used. Check the product definition before relying on an advertised rate.

Why the vehicle and battery still matter

For a secured loan, the vehicle is normally the security. The lender may consider its age, accepted value, model availability and expected age when the loan ends. Battery condition can affect a used EV’s value even when a separate battery-health report is not required.

Before buying a used EV, check the remaining battery and vehicle warranties, service history, charging performance and recall status. Consider an independent battery-health assessment where one is available. A PPSR search does not establish battery condition.

Compare the complete ownership budget

Running costs depend on the vehicle, kilometres travelled, electricity tariffs, charging location, tyres, servicing and insurance. Build a vehicle-specific budget instead of relying on a generic fuel-saving claim.

Budget separately for a home charger and any electrical work. Adding these costs to the vehicle loan can increase both the debt and interest without increasing the lender’s accepted vehicle value by the same amount.

  • Purchase price, duty, registration and insurance
  • Home and public charging assumptions
  • Tyres, servicing and repair access
  • Battery and vehicle warranty coverage
  • Expected ownership period and resale uncertainty

Tax treatment depends on the transaction

The ATO publishes an indexed luxury-car-tax threshold for qualifying fuel-efficient vehicles. Check the threshold for the relevant financial year and delivery date rather than relying on a previous-year figure.

The electric-car fringe-benefits-tax exemption only applies when its statutory conditions are met and the vehicle is provided through an employment arrangement. It is not a general discount for a personal EV purchase. State duty and registration rules are separate and can change independently.

How to compare EV finance without a rate table

Compare each option using the same vehicle price, contribution and loan structure. Promotional rates can be useful, but only after checking whether they change the vehicle price, available discount, term, balloon payment or eligibility.
